Using artificial hedges in outdoor areas: A case study

We always love hearing from our customers, so when we received an amazing response from our client Matt about his artificial hedges, we knew we had to share it with the world!

Artificial hedges have aesthetic appeal

One of the key benefits of using an artificial hedge is that it stays green and looks perfectly trimmed all year long! Anyone who has had to deal with their real life counterparts will tell you that maintaining hedges requires a lot of time and effort, and most people outsource hedge trimming just to make sure it gets done right.

On the flip side, waiting for a real hedge to fill out is also a concern. Artificial hedges, however, come to you already ‘fully grown’. This is great for those of us who are a little more impatient, or simply want a project to look great from the start.

Another thing to consider is that artificial hedges don’t shed like real hedges do, which was an important factor for Matt. There are few things worse than seeing dried leaves all over a driveway or strewn across pristine white pebbles. You’d be surprised how much time in a day can be wasted just cleaning up dried leaves, especially during particularly dry months or windy weather.

Artificial hedges are low maintenance

If you opt for artificial hedges, you’re saving yourself a lot of time and effort in the long term. These plants do not require any watering, fertilising, trimming, or soil replacement. Just set it up and you’re good to go!

This is particularly important for homeowners who simply do not have the time to maintain real life hedges, or simply do not enjoy gardening, but still want to be surrounded by greenery. Consider different colours and textures

Matt shares that he noticed that his driveway was a really dark colour, and in order for his project to really pop, he needed to break up the large expanse of the dark concrete with other colours and textures.

He very cleverly used white ice pebbles to add contrast and lightness. These pebbles help delineate the edge of the driveway too, adding a bit of a sculptural design element to the project. The artificial topiary balls that are placed along this white pebbled area at equal intervals also add a polished look.

Matt noticed that the long fence along the driveway would’ve been just too much green if they’d opted for hedges from top to bottom. He found a very creative solution to this – Merbau decking! The decking allowed them to achieve enough height for privacy while incorporating more colour and texture to the project.

The wood decking and greenery combines to create a half-wall look that has become increasingly popular. We’ve seen dozens of clients use this approach to decorate their fences, with some even creating chevron designs or unique framed green walls for their outdoor spaces.

Think of it as a long-term investment

Matt points out that although the initial cost of this project was high, he calculated that it will pay for itself within 5 years. This makes absolute sense when you consider the costs you save when you don’t need to clean up leaves, trim the hedge, water the hedge, or replace dead plants.

Aside from saving on costs financially, there’s also something to be said about the amount of time you’ll save from not having to do all that. That’s time that can be spent enjoying your beautiful outdoor space with family and friends instead!

More importantly, these hedges will continue looking fresh, structured, and eye-catching for many years. Having hedges that help create privacy all year round and looks good in every season is a pretty great deal.
