What’s better than a room with a view? A room with an uninterrupted view!
A stunning vista often helps sell houses and draws us to a place to stay in our travels. And thanks to modern glass fencing, we can easily create these stunning outlooks at home.
Unsurprisingly, glass pool fencing and balustrades have become very popular in Australia. So what kind of glass fences are available? Are they safe? How can you use glass fencing to make the most of your green outlook?
Many of our clients are considering a glass fence once their artificial green wall or artificial hedging is installed – especially for their pool area. Two of the most common questions are how to install it and whether glass fencing panels easily shatter.
So we’ve done a bit of research and gathered information on the most common questions. Here’s what we found out.
What types of glass fences are available?
You have three options, framed, semi-framed and frameless glass-panel fencing.
Typically, for framed and semi-framed fences, the posts are fixed to the ground first, and the panels are inserted. The fully framed glass fence will also have a rail or top bar.
For a nearly invisible fence that offers you the safety barrier needed, opt for a frameless glass fence. A frameless fence can be installed in different ways, either by fixing the panels below the ground or with simple stainless steel plugs bolted to its surface. Either way, this is the most seamless-looking fence.
How do I install glass fences?
Well, the short answer is you don’t – unless you have experience with this kind of installation. Installing a glass fence correctly and safely is quite a complex and potentially dangerous process. But if you are still contemplating this as a DIY project, the Australian safety regulations may convince you otherwise – they are complex and differ from state to state.
We highly recommend leaving this work to a certified, professional installer.
We also recommend that you consult about your fencing options to choose the fence that is perfect for your needs. Then, get a few quotes. This type of fencing is not cheap, but costs can vary quite a bit depending on what option you choose.
Does glass pool fencing shatter?
The aesthetics of your glass fence are important for sure. But it’s quality and safety that should be top of your list.
While glass might look fragile, these fencing panels are remarkably strong. Especially pool fences are usually made of tempered glass. That’s up to six times stronger than regular glass. It can withstand strong winds, and a breakage will likely result in relatively harmless and safe crumbles.
That said, even high-quality, strengthened glass is not 100% shatter-proof. Therefore, if you detect a small chip, it is best to have it checked out by your installer.
Making your fence shine
If you are already the proud owner of a glass fence, you’ll know its upkeep is a doddle. Unless you are in a coastal area with salty sea breezes, a wipe-down with soapy water 3 – 4 times a year is all it needs. So you might as well do it while giving your artificial vertical garden a quick once-over! You’ll have your entire outdoor area sparkling in no time at all.
An almost invisible fence allows you to extend your view as far as you want. Whether this is the skyline vista from your balcony or the unobstructed view towards a lush green boundary fence, glass will always give you a sense of more space and openness.
If you’re after privacy, a frosted glass panel may be a great solution to shield from curious eyes but still let all the light in. However, another trendy way to create your private retreat is using artificial greenery. Here’s a great example from a recent install.
Our client opted to add artificial green wall panels to their existing fencing. In this case, it transformed the entire feel of the balcony from a relatively monotone space into a vibrant outdoor area with flair – and incredible views.
