Designer Plants Five Key Technologies

This is the floor-standing end of the succulent ranges, where plants are chosen for silhouette rather than close detail. Most products are UV resistant with UVTex inhibitors bonded within the leaf, and the thicker blade and rosette forms are moulded with RealTex surface variation so edges catch light unevenly.

Choosing Architectural Artificial Succulents, Yellow Tongues and Agaves

Where the small succulent bowls are detail products, this range is about outline: fifteen pieces chosen because they hold a shape a room can be built around. Heights run from a 50cm agave up to a 150cm bird of paradise, taking in a 60cm agave, yucca grass at 75cm and 115cm, yellow tongue and sansevieria forms at 60cm, 85cm, 90cm and 100cm, and a bird of paradise with red flowers at 110cm. Prices run from $9.95 to $249.95. Almost everything here is UV resistant, which is what separates this page from the indoor succulent bowls.

Styling and sizing

Four silhouettes do the work and they behave differently in a room. Agave is a low wide rosette that spreads outward and suits a plinth or a raised bed edge. Yellow tongue and sansevieria are vertical blades that take almost no floor width. Yucca grass arches and softens a hard corner, and bird of paradise carries broad paddle leaves that need a metre of clear space at 150cm.

Positioning and light

Nothing here depends on light, so a dark stairwell landing works as well as a sunroom. The UV-resistant products suit permanent outdoor positions, including courtyards, poolside settings and open balconies where a living agave would still need drainage. The 50cm agave is supplied without a pot, so an outdoor position needs a vessel with drainage rather than a sealed bowl.

Selection guidance

Match the silhouette to the gap. Narrow and tall wants a blade form, wide and low wants an agave, and an empty corner wants the arch of a yucca. For depth in snake plants specifically, including a 150cm option, see artificial snake plants, and for vessels see planters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall are the plants in the succulents, yellow tongues and agaves range?

From 50cm to 150cm. The agaves are 50cm and 60cm, the yucca grass comes at 75cm and 115cm, the yellow tongue and sansevieria forms run 60cm, 85cm, 90cm and 100cm, and the bird of paradise is available at 110cm with red flowers and at 150cm. The trailing string of pearls at 75cm is the only non-upright piece.

Are fake agaves and artificial agaves the same thing?

Yes. What matters more with a fake agave than the wording is the leaf thickness, because an agave leaf is rigid and tapers to a stiff point, and a thin moulded version flops and immediately looks wrong. Both agaves here are built with the rigidity in the leaf so the rosette holds its spread without support.

Does the 50cm agave come with a pot?

No. The 50cm agave is supplied without a pot, which makes it useful for dropping into an existing planter or a garden bed where the surrounding material hides the base. The 60cm agave and the potted yucca grass options do include their vessel. Empty vessels are in planters.

What is a yellow tongue plant?

Yellow tongue is one of the common Australian names for sansevieria, the same plant sold as snake plant or mother-in-law's tongue, named for the pale margin running down the edge of the blade. This page carries the yellow tongue forms at 60cm and 100cm among a broader mix. For the full depth of heights in that one species, see artificial snake plants.

Can these artificial agaves and yellow tongues be used outdoors?

The UV-resistant products in the range are built for it, including the agave at 50cm, the yucca grass at 75cm and 115cm and the sansevieria forms. UVTex inhibitors are bonded within the leaf on those products rather than sprayed on, which is what holds the colour through a full summer in a west-facing courtyard.

What is the difference between the 75cm and 115cm yucca grass?

Both are the same arching grass form, but they solve different problems. At 75cm the yucca sits on a bench, a plinth or a low wall and reads at seated height. At 115cm it stands on the floor and fills the gap between a low sofa back and a window sill. A premium black potted version of the 75cm is also available where the pot needs to disappear.

Which of these plants suits a narrow corridor or a lift lobby?

The blade forms. Sansevieria and yellow tongue at 60cm, 85cm, 90cm and 100cm grow upward rather than outward, so they hold visual height in roughly 30cm of floor width. Avoid the agaves in a corridor, since the rosette spreads sideways at ankle height and becomes something people walk into.

How are the taller plants kept stable?

The floor-standing pieces at 110cm and above have the most leverage and are the ones worth weighting. Adding clean sand or gravel around the base inside a decorative outer pot drops the centre of gravity and stops a knock tipping the plant. Wipe the blades down with a damp cloth two or three times a year, working from base to tip.

Commercial Grade. Made for Lasting Impact.

Architectural succulent forms are specified for hotel entries, apartment lobbies, restaurant courtyards and car park landscaping, where the planting has to hold a line in positions that get no water and no light.

Silhouette over detail. At 100cm and above these read from across a lobby rather than from arm's length, which is the requirement in a space nobody stops to inspect.

Narrow footprints. Yellow tongue and sansevieria forms at 60cm to 100cm hold height while occupying almost no floor width, which suits corridors, lift lobbies and the dead space beside a doorway.

Outdoor positions without irrigation. The UV-resistant products take courtyards and open terraces where a planted bed would need soil depth, drainage and a maintenance contract. Specification questions can go to 1800 617 341.

Pot inclusion varies by product and is stated on each listing.
