DIY fence spikes: measure, order & fit.
Measure the fence, calculate your strips, choose your finish and order. Then fit the strips along the fence top using screws suited to your fence material.

Start with your fence length
Measure along the fence top in metres. Treat gates, corners and separate sections as individual runs.
Fence length (m) ÷ 1.25 = strips needed
Always round up to a whole strip. For separate runs, calculate each run first, then add the strips together.
Example: a single 16 m fence section needs 13 strips, so order 2 packs.
How many packs do I need?
Enter each fence section in metres. Add another section for a gate or a separate length of fence.
Each strip is 1.25 m long. Each pack contains 12 strips (15 m). We round each section up to a whole strip.
Choose your finish and pack quantity
Designer Guard comes in packs of 12 strips. Divide your total strips by 12 and round up. Each pack supplies 15 m of material.
Ready to fit
Place. Screw. Repeat.
Fit the strips along the fence top, one section at a time.
Wear protective gloves and eye protection when handling and fixing the strips.
Place the strip
Place the strip onto the fence top and align it along the edge. Fix into sound supporting timber or metal.
Choose the right screws
Use timber screws for a timber paling fence, or metal screws for a metal fence. Choose a 10 mm (1 cm) wide head and a screw length suited to the supporting material.
Secure and repeat
Secure the strip through its fixing holes, then place the next strip end to end. Check each strip is secure and keep gate movement clear.
What should I check on my fence?
Use a sound supporting rail or cap with enough surface for the strip and fixings. Check the strip sits correctly before fastening. For an unusual fence profile, masonry or mesh, send the team a photo for help.
