Designer Plants Five Key Technologies

Every format in this range, from 1m x 1m panels and tiles through to 3m x 1m rolls, extendable trellis screens and free-standing hedges, is built on RealTex leaf construction with UVTex inhibitors bonded within the leaf on outdoor-rated products. Fire-tested products are available where a project brief carries a compliance requirement.

How to Screen a Fence, Boundary or Balcony with Artificial Hedging

Screening is usually a response to something specific: a bare Colorbond fence, an overlooked deck, or a bin bay that undoes a finished courtyard. Artificial hedge screening answers that on the day it goes up, with no growing season and no clipping. This hub gathers every format supplied for the job, from 1m x 1m hedge panels and tiles to 3m x 1m ivy rolls, extendable trellis screens and free-standing hedges. Which one suits depends on whether there is something solid to fix to, and whether you may fix to it.

Measuring the run

Work in square metres: run length multiplied by screening height. Panels and tiles cover one square metre each, a 3m x 1m ivy roll covers three square metres, and an extendable trellis opens to roughly two. A 5 metre fence screened to 1.8 metres is 9 square metres, which is nine panels, three rolls, or five trellis screens.

Fixing to what is already there

Colorbond takes rolls and trellis through the fence profile with cable ties, or panels on a light timber batten frame. Timber palings take screws and washers directly, and rendered or masonry walls take a plug fixing. The installation guide works through each surface, including the options that leave no holes at all for rented properties.

Choosing a format

Panels give the densest, most uniform finish and read as a clipped hedge, so they suit a boundary seen every day. Ivy rolls are the fastest way to cover a long plain run and will follow a curve or a gate. Trellis screens suit small balconies and awkward widths, and free-standing hedges move with you in a rental.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much artificial hedge screening is needed for a standard fence?

Multiply the run length by the height to be screened to get square metres. A 5 metre fence screened to 1.8 metres is 9 square metres, which is nine 1m x 1m panels, three 3m x 1m ivy rolls, or five extendable trellis screens. Round up rather than down, because the sections that meet posts, taps and downpipes lose material to trimming.

Can artificial screening be fixed to a Colorbond fence?

Yes, and it is the most common request in this range. Ivy rolls and trellis screens cable-tie straight through the ridges of the Colorbond profile with no drilling at all, while rigid 1m x 1m panels are better mounted on a light timber batten frame so the sheet stays flat. Cable ties in a colour close to the foliage disappear once the leaf settles over them.

Which screening format works on a rental balcony?

Free-standing hedges in troughs, because nothing is attached to the building at all and the units come with you at the end of the lease. Where a balustrade can be tied to without being drilled, extendable trellis screens and ivy rolls both fix with cable ties and lift off leaving no marks. Check the body corporate rules on balcony height before choosing a screen taller than the rail.

Do fake hedges still look convincing close up?

The distance a fake hedge is viewed from should drive the choice. A boundary fence seen from ten metres across a yard is forgiving, so a single-leaf panel works. A courtyard wall passed at arm's length shows everything, so a panel with varied leaf sizes and two or three green tones in the face holds up far better than a flat single-tone leaf. RealTex construction varies leaf shape and colour across the face for exactly this reason.

What is the difference between hedge panels and artificial ivy rolls?

Panels are rigid 1m x 1m tiles that sit flat and read as a clipped hedge, which suits a straight boundary. Artificial ivy rolls are 3m x 1m flexible sheets that wrap a curve, a column or a gate and cover three square metres in a single fixing run. Long back-of-house runs usually take rolls; the elevation people stand next to usually takes panels.

Will artificial hedge screening fade in full Australian sun?

Not the UV-certified products. UVTex inhibitors are bonded within the leaf material rather than sprayed onto the surface, so there is no coating to wear off through a summer. A 5-year UV warranty is provided on all certified outdoor panels. Products without an explicit UV rating are intended for interior positions.

Can screening be cut to fit around a tap, downpipe or meter box?

Yes. Both the rigid panel backing and the flexible roll backing cut with secateurs or tin snips, and the foliage is then teased back over the cut edge so no backing shows. Cut from the back of the sheet and keep the offcut, since a 200mm strip is often exactly what is needed above a gate or below a window sill.

Is artificial screening suitable around a pool area?

It is one of the better applications for it. There is no leaf drop into the water, no root system working towards the paving or the pipework, and no soil bed to wash out. Rinse with fresh water occasionally where wind carries pool splash onto the screening, and keep any pool fencing compliance gap clear when positioning free-standing units.

Commercial Grade. Made for Lasting Impact.

Screening is what a site is judged on before anyone reaches the entry, and hoardings, plant and bin enclosures, car park edges and outdoor dining boundaries all have to hold a finish in full sun.

Mixed formats on one site. Long service runs are usually covered with 3m x 1m rolls while the visible elevation takes 1m x 1m panels, and both can be drawn from a single specification.

Compliance-led briefs. Fire-tested products sit within the range where a brief requires them, and the requirement is confirmed against the individual product before anything is specified.

End-of-life handling. Panels and rolls stripped out at the end of a fit-out are accepted back through the Designer Plants artificial greenery recycling programme.
