Designer Plants Five Key Technologies
Five material technologies engineered into every Designer Plants specimen. Built to hold colour, finish and density in Australian conditions.
Outdoor privacy screens from Designer Plants turn a fence, wall or open boundary into a solid green plant screen, using 1m x 1m hedge panels, ivy rolls, extendable trellis and freestanding portable hedges. UV resistant foliage holds colour in Australian sun, and Group 1 certified panels to AS 5637.1 are available for commercial sites.
Choosing Artificial Privacy Screens for Fences, Walls and Boundaries
A privacy screen has one job: block the sightline without looking like a barrier. The range covers 1m x 1m hedge panels in boxwood, buxus, laurel, photinia, jasmine and Boston ivy from $79.95, a 3m x 1m boxwood roll with privacy backing at $219.95, ivy rolls from $60, and extendable trellis screens in jasmine, laurel and photinia that open to 2m x 1m. Portable hedges run from 25cm to 200cm high for spaces where nothing can be fixed.
Fence privacy screens: panels, rolls and portable hedges
Hedge panels join edge to edge, so the area in square metres is the panel count: a 1.8m fence running 6m takes 11 panels once rounded up. Rolls cover a long run with fewer joins and suit chain wire and pool fencing. Portable hedges stand on their own frame and move with the furniture, which suits rental courtyards and outdoor dining.
Screening in sun and wind
Hedge panels and rolls carry UVTex, with UV inhibitors bonded within the leaf, and a 5-year UV warranty is provided on all certified outdoor panels. On an exposed boundary, fix panels at every join and along the top edge so wind cannot lift a corner, or use the shade-cloth backed ivy roll, which lets some air pass through. A top edge at 1.8m clears most standing sightlines.
Fire-rated screening for commercial sites
Not every screen here is fire rated, so check each product for its tier and standard before specifying it. Group 1 certified panels to AS 5637.1 carry the highest classification and are made to order on quote, with the Luxury White Oasis 1m x 1m panel held in stock at $199.95. FireTex panels are tested to AS/NZS 1530.3 with a Spread of Flame Index of 0.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best fence privacy screen?
For a solid timber or masonry fence, 1m x 1m hedge panels give the cleanest finish and can be cut to height with snips. For chain wire, pool fencing or a long run, a 3m x 1m roll covers more ground with fewer joins. Where nothing can be fixed, a portable hedge on its own frame does the same job.
How many hedge panels do I need?
Multiply the height by the width of the area in metres and round up; each 1m x 1m panel covers one square metre. A 1.8m high fence running 6m is 10.8 square metres, so 11 panels. Order a sample first if matching a colour to an existing fence or render.
Are artificial privacy screens fire rated?
It depends on the product, so check each listing for its tier and standard. Group 1 certified panels to AS 5637.1 are made to order on quote, apart from the Luxury White Oasis panel, which is stocked. FireTex products are tested to AS/NZS 1530.3 with a Spread of Flame Index of 0, and the standard range is fire tested to AS/NZS 1530.3.
What does Group 1 fire certified mean?
Group 1 is the highest classification under AS 5637.1, the Australian standard that groups wall and ceiling linings by how they contribute to fire growth. Groups run from 1 to 4, so a Group 2 panel sits a step below Group 1. Product-specific test documentation is available on request for architects, builders and certifiers.
How long do outdoor privacy screens last in Australian sun?
Panels and rolls with UVTex are engineered to hold colour through repeated summers, because the inhibitors sit within the leaf rather than on the surface and cannot wash off. A full northern or western aspect is the most demanding position. A 5-year UV warranty is provided on all certified outdoor panels.
Can I install a privacy screen on a rental property?
Yes, with fixings that come away cleanly. Cable ties on chain wire or a timber lattice leave no marks, and portable hedges need no fixing at all. Check the lease before screwing into a fence or wall.
