Choosing Artificial Grass for Balconies, Courtyards and Small Spaces
Artificial grass gives a small outdoor area a green floor without mowing, watering or bare patches where the sun never reaches. This range is sized for DIY coverage rather than a full lawn installation: a 3m x 1m Landscape Series roll at $49.95 covers 3 square metres, and a set of nine 30cm x 30cm interlocking tiles at $79.95 covers 0.81 square metres. Both cut to shape with a sharp utility knife. Pegs sit in installation parts, and UV resistant outdoor plants finish the edges.
Artificial grass rolls or tiles
Rolls suit a rectangular run where fewer joins matter, such as a courtyard strip or a play corner. Artificial grass tiles click together over pavers, concrete or decking with no adhesive, and lift out again for a rental balcony, a rooftop or a temporary event floor. Tiles also make it simple to replace one worn square rather than a whole roll.
Sun, shade and positioning
The interlocking decking tiles carry UVTex, with UV inhibitors bonded within the blade, so they suit a balcony, rooftop or terrace in direct sun. The Landscape Series roll is made for indoor use and sheltered outdoor areas such as covered patios, verandahs and shaded side returns. Check the product specification before laying synthetic turf in full sun.
Measuring and laying
Measure the length and width in metres and multiply to get the area, then allow around 10% extra for trimming around edges and posts. On soil, pin the edges and seams of a roll with galvanised pegs roughly every 30cm, which works out to around 25 to 30 pegs for a single 3m x 1m roll. On hard surfaces, tiles need no fixing at all.

Can artificial grass go on a balcony?
Yes. Interlocking tiles are the simplest option, as they sit on tiles or concrete without adhesive and lift out when you move. Keep drainage outlets clear so water runs off rather than pooling under the turf, and check strata by-laws for any rules on floor coverings.
Are fake grass, artificial grass and synthetic turf the same thing?
Yes, the terms are used for the same product. The practical differences are the format, roll or tile, and whether the product carries a UV rating for full sun. Both are listed in each product specification.
How much artificial grass do I need?
Multiply the length by the width in metres to get the area, then add around 10% for trimming. Each roll covers 3 square metres and each tile set covers 0.81 square metres, so a 3m x 2m courtyard is an exact fit for two rolls laid side by side, or takes nine tile sets once trimming is allowed for. Irregular shapes are easiest to cover with tiles.
How do I fix artificial grass down?
On soil or compacted sand, pin the edges and seams with galvanised pegs roughly every 30cm. Pegs are stocked in packs of 10 and 100 in installation parts. On concrete, pavers or decking, the interlocking tiles need no fixing and stay in place under their own weight.
How is artificial grass cleaned?
Hose it down to clear dust and leaves, and sweep against the grain with a stiff broom to lift the blades after heavy use. Pet areas benefit from a more regular rinse. Avoid solvent-based cleaners, which can damage the blade finish.
