Before Our Collaboration

Some time ago, our team was contacted by a homeowner who was tired of their patio.

While the space looked modern and well-designed, our potential client felt like this wasn’t enough and that the space was empty. Contemporary, but empty.

The client wanted a solution that adds life to the patio without increasing maintenance. They wanted greenery that looks rich, realistic, and permanent. They also wanted the green elements to remain visible from inside the home, including the living area and bedroom.

In the beginning, they were looking for any greenery. But, after talking to a few friends and reading some tips online, they determined that they actually didn’t have the time or the lifestyle to keep up with real plants. So, after a Google search or two, they settled on an alternative idea - artificial green walls - and reached out to our team.

At Designer Plants, we immediately saw strong potential in the space and knew we could elevate it with the right panel placement and design approach.

The Problem

Our client owns a modern residential home with a covered outdoor patio. Large sliding glass doors connect the patio to the interior living space and a bedroom window overlooks the fence line and outdoor area.

The patio already felt calm and stylish. However, the fence appeared flat and unfinished. The space needed texture, contrast, and greenery to feel complete.

The homeowner wanted artificial hedge panels that:

  • Look realistic up close
  • Add depth and structure to the fence
  • Integrate naturally with timber features
  • Stay green all year
  • Require no watering or upkeep

Natural plants did not suit the project from the start because they would require ongoing care. And since the patio couldn’t provide consistent coverage, they feared the plants would struggle in shaded sections.

The client needed décor that feels intentional and premium, that enhances the space rather than distracts from it. So, we chose to take on this project because the patio already had strong foundations and we could easily see the vision.

The layout, proportions, and materials made it ideal for a full outdoor fit-out. We planned to use multiple faux hedge panels positioned between wooden fence features to create rhythm and balance.

During the Process

The patio connects directly to the living area through large glass doors, and the bedroom window also faces the outdoor space.

We worked closely with the client to refine the design and focused on hedge panels that:

  • Deliver realistic texture
  • Add visual depth
  • Maintain rich colour in natural light
  • Blend seamlessly with timber and stone
  • Stay low maintenance

We prioritised realism at every stage and, from the start, avoided flat or artificial-looking panels. We selected panels with density, variation, and depth, with a goal to make the greenery feel built-in, not added later.

We also focused on balance. The hedge panels needed to complement the wooden features without overpowering them, so every section of the fence needed to feel intentional and cohesive.

The Solution

Connie, our Operations Manager, guided the project from start to finish, as she does with most of our Australia-based clients.

Connie reviewed the images carefully, assessed the layout and lighting, and recommended the most suitable hedge panel for the space. She explained the installation process and timelines clearly, and was the main point of contact for the client.

Together, they discussed:

  • Panel spacing and alignment
  • How to integrate hedge panels with timber features
  • Visual flow across the fence
  • Installation options

The client chose professional installation to ensure a clean and precise finish, so we connected them to a reputable firm, which completed the installation in just a few days.

The most detailed part of the project involved installing wooden vertical features between the hedge panels. We needed to maintain symmetry and spacing while preserving the natural flow of the design.

The installers worked carefully within the existing fence structure so that the hedge panels now sit perfectly between timber elements. The final layout feels structured, refined, and intentional.

After the Process

The panels require no maintenance, no watering, no trimming, and no seasonal care. They stay lush and consistent throughout the year and are protected with UV resistance.

The greenery remains visible from inside the home, as the bedroom window now looks onto a rich green backdrop. The living area looks visually connected to the patio, and the entire home feels hugged by greenery.

The client expressed strong satisfaction with the result, and they especially appreciated the low-maintenance solution. They loved how the panels elevated the space without overwhelming it.

Next Steps

Artificial hedge panels continue to grow in popularity across residential outdoor spaces. Homeowners choose them because they deliver a strong visual impact without ongoing care. And in today’s busy world, most homeowners need exactly that.

We enjoyed working on this project from the start. The patio already had strong design potential, which made it easy to create a cohesive outdoor solution.

And now, our team remains available to support the client with any future questions or updates.
