Before Our Collaboration
Gumboots Early Learning is a family-owned early childhood education group operating across multiple centres around Melbourne. It’s built around a play-based curriculum, with a strong emphasis on nature-based learning, bush kinder, and garden-to-plate programs.
For a childcare provider whose brand identity centres on natural, hands-on learning environments, the decor inside their centres needed to reflect that same philosophy while meeting the strict material safety standards required around young children.
Before reaching out to our team, Gumboots had an entryway and reception space that didn’t look as welcoming as the staff hoped for.

At the time, it was a stretch of plain wall above the front door and a bare circular feature area that didn't reflect the nature-immersed experience families were promised. The team considered and ruled out real plants early, given the impracticality of live foliage in a high-traffic childcare setting with constant little hands nearby.
So, they decided to invest in an alternative - artificial greenery.
The problem
Gumboots needed greenery that could deliver a "wow" first impression for touring families, without compromising on child safety.
In short, that meant ruling out any product that couldn't prove, on paper, that it was free from substances that could be risky for vulnerable young children and toddlers. The staff needed to be sure that VOCs, heavy metals, and other hazardous substances don’t somehow find their way into the centre.
That was the biggest consideration when looking at artificial greenery, especially as cheap suppliers often forgo safety for a few extra bucks. For Gumboots, that also meant finding a supplier who could execute a brief beyond a standard square panel, as they wanted a circular feature that looked organic rather than "off-the-shelf."
The project and the panels used needed to be customised, and that’s always a wonderful challenge for our talented team.
During the Process
Our design team started with a site visit to measure the entryway and the circular feature wall, then worked through material certification requirements early, since child safety was the non-negotiable factor driving every product decision.

We talked through options from our vertical garden green wall range, landed on the Luxury Spring Sensation for the entry panels and the Country Fern for the circular feature, and planned the LED strip lighting to highlight the entryway foliage without exposed wiring near reach height.
The solution
The entryway now features Luxury Spring Sensation panels installed directly above the door, with an integrated LED strip light drawing attention to the layered foliage as families walk in.

The staff chose the Spring Sensation for its soft, naturalistic mixed-foliage look, which suited the warm, homely first impression Gumboots wanted to create rather than a more formal, clipped-hedge aesthetic.
The standout element of this project is the circular Country Fern installation. A common misconception is that green wall panels are locked into the square or rectangular shape they arrive in.

In reality, our panels can be trimmed with scissors or a utility blade and shaped to fit almost any brief, because the foliage is layered and mounted on a flexible backing rather than a rigid frame.
For the Gumboots feature, our team trimmed and layered Country Fern panels around a curved frame, working the foliage inward so no straight edges or backing were visible along the circumference. This is the same cut-and-shape approach we use for bespoke green wall designs like ovals, ceiling installs, logo cut-outs, and irregular architectural features.

These shapes are all achievable with the same base panels, given enough trim allowance planned in from the outset, which you can check yourself with the help of our panel calculator.
Every panel used in this project is built on our SafeTex technology, engineered to eliminate volatile organic compound (VOC) off-gassing and safe for use around children. SafeTex products are backed by RoHS compliance, an international standard restricting 10 hazardous substances.
Our team calls these the "Toxic Ten": lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), and four restricted phthalates (DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DIBP).
None of these substances are present in Designer Plants panels, and documentation is available on request for compliance or parent enquiries. For a childcare environment, this is the baseline requirement, and it's why our panels are also specified across healthcare and wellness spaces where material safety is scrutinised just as closely.
After the Process
The entryway now greets every family with a warm, lit, botanical first impression, and the circular greenery feature has become a talking point during centre tours.

As a result, it’s reinforced the nature-based philosophy Gumboots is built around, with no watering, pruning, or replacement required, bar a simple wipe-down.
Staff have full confidence in the material safety of the installation, and the finished look strengthens the sense of an immersive, nature-connected environment for the children.

FAQs
-
What is SafeTex?
-
SafeTex is Designer Plants' proprietary technology that ensures there are no VOC emissions or hazardous chemical off-gassing in our artificial greenery, making it suitable for homes, childcare centres, schools, and healthcare settings.
-
Are Designer Plants panels RoHS compliant?
-
Yes. All Designer Plants panels are RoHS compliant, meaning they're independently verified to be free from the 10 restricted hazardous substances covered by the standard.
-
What are the "Toxic Ten" substances RoHS restricts?
-
The 10 restricted substances are lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), and four phthalates: DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DIBP. None of these are present in Designer Plants panels.
-
Can I cut artificial green wall panels into custom shapes?
-
Yes. You can trim and layer your artificial green wall panels around a custom frame to any shape you want. Our team can help you find a good shape for your space.
