Planning an Artificial Vertical Garden or Green Wall
A green wall solves a problem a garden bed cannot: it turns a blank fence, a courtyard wall or a narrow side return into planting without taking a single square metre of floor. Panels in this range interlock into a continuous face, so the finished wall reads as one planted surface rather than a grid of tiles. Working out how many panels
Panels are supplied at a standard 1 metre by 1 metre face. Measure the width and height of the area in metres, multiply them, and round up to the next whole panel. Add roughly ten per cent for cuts where the area includes corners, meter boxes or downpipes. Panels trim with secateurs or heavy scissors.
Fixing to the surface
Timber and Colorbond fences take panels directly with screws and washers. Masonry and rendered brick need a plug fixing. Where the wall cannot be penetrated, panels mount to a batten frame or a lightweight mesh backing that sits proud of the surface, which also allows airflow behind the wall. Mixing panel styles
Most walls read better with two or three complementary panel styles rather than one repeated. Alternating a dense boxwood with a mixed foliage panel breaks the repeat pattern the eye picks up at distance. How many panels are needed to cover a wall or fence?
Panels are supplied at a 1 metre by 1 metre face, so multiply the width by the height in metres and round up to the next whole panel. A 4 metre by 2 metre fence takes 8 panels. Add around ten per cent for cuts where the area includes corners, downpipes or a meter box.
What is the difference between a fake plant wall and an artificial green wall?
Nothing, in product terms. Fake plant wall, fake hedge wall, artificial green wall and vertical garden are all used for the same thing. The distinction worth drawing is between a UV-certified panel built for permanent outdoor use and an indoor decorative panel. A fake plant wall without UVTex inhibitors bonded within the leaf will fade in an exposed Australian position, which is the single most common reason a wall is replaced early.
Can artificial green wall panels be fixed to a Colorbond fence?
Yes. Colorbond and timber both take panels directly using screws and washers through the panel backing. Masonry and rendered brick need a plug fixing. Where the surface cannot be penetrated, panels mount to a batten frame or a mesh backing that sits proud of the wall and allows airflow behind the greenery.
Are vertical garden panels suitable for full Australian sun?
The UV-certified panels in this range are. They carry UVTex inhibitors bonded within the leaf rather than sprayed onto the surface, which is what stops the colour washing out over a summer. A 5-year UV warranty is provided on all certified outdoor panels.
How do artificial green walls compare with artificial hedge panels?
Green wall panels are designed to be seen as a continuous planted face across a large area, with mixed foliage and varied leaf forms. Artificial hedges are uniform in leaf and colour, and are used where the intent is a clipped, formal line rather than a lush wall. Many projects use both, with hedging at ground level and a green wall above.
Do the panels need any maintenance?
No watering, feeding or pruning. An occasional rinse with a hose clears dust and pollen from the panel face. Unlike a living wall, there is no irrigation line to fail and no drainage to manage behind the surface.
Can a sample be ordered before committing to a full wall?
Yes, and it is worth doing on any area above a few square metres. Panel colour reads differently against a dark Colorbond fence than against a rendered white wall. Samples are available from the free samples range.
Are the panels recyclable at end of life?
Yes. Panels are eligible for the Designer Plants artificial greenery recycling programme, which takes back end-of-life panels rather than sending them to landfill.
