Deck Transformation: Bamboo to Green Wall

Natural screening materials like bamboo bring warmth to an outdoor area when first installed, but sun and rain gradually wear them down. Colour fades, the finish dulls and the screen that once framed the space starts to date it. This pool deck is a clear example. A customer who visited the Designer Plants showroom in Braeside replaced the weathered bamboo panelling along their back fence with Luxury Country Fern Recycled Vertical Garden panels. The before and after images show how much a single change to the backdrop can lift an entire outdoor area. Application Pool deck, cabana and boundary fence Previous finish Weathered bamboo panelling Product Luxury Country Fern Recycled Vertical Garden / Green Wall UV Resistant 100cm x 100cm (SKU 1097773-1) Coverage Back fence and the rear wall of the cabana Key outcome A lush, low-maintenance backdrop with no irrigation required Before and After Before Weathered bamboo panelling between timber posts, with faded brown tones that made the deck feel dated. After Country Fern panels fill each bay, with the existing timber posts retained as a frame. Project Gallery Viewed from the pool, the green wall runs continuously from inside the cabana along the back fence, creating a resort-style backdrop for the whole deck. At close range, layered ferns, grasses and flowering accents give the wall depth and natural colour variation. Assessing the Original Screening The before image shows the typical condition of natural screening after years of outdoor exposure: uneven colour, a dull brown finish and an overall look that worked against the well-kept deck. Rather than replacing it with another material that would weather the same way, the customer chose a UV-resistant artificial green wall made for long-term outdoor use. Design Decisions Decision Effect Retaining the timber posts Breaks the fence line into framed bays and adds structure Full-height coverage Creates a continuous green backdrop above the lounge area Extending into the cabana Carries the greenery through both the covered and open sections of the deck Country Fern's mixed foliage Colour variation and leaf texture read as planted rather than flat Product Specification Dimensions 100cm x 100cm Coverage 1m² per panel Material Recycled LDPE with RealTex and UVTex UV inhibitors integrated within the leaf Indoor / outdoor Suitable for both Frost resistance Frost resistant Warranty 5 years (UV-certified outdoor installations) Installation Screws with washers, zip ties or staples, depending on surface Panel joining Interlocking panels that trim to size with standard scissors Toxicity Non-toxic, SafeTex certified End of life Eligible for the Designer Plants recycling programme Planning a Similar Deck Transformation Measure each bay between posts and calculate the total area in square metres. Each panel covers 1m². Assess the existing screening. Sound structures can act as a mounting surface, while deteriorated screening should be removed and the panels fixed to the frame or a suitable backing. Match the fixing method to the surface: zip ties for screening and mesh, screws with washers for solid timber, or staples where suitable. Order a sample to check the colour against decking, timber and furniture finishes. Plan seam placement and allow for trimming at posts and edges. If the fence forms part of a pool barrier, confirm the requirements with your local council or a registered pool barrier inspector before installation. Fixings and tools are available in the installation equipment range. Applications Beyond Residential Decks Setting Why it suits Body corporate pool areas Low-maintenance presentation for shared outdoor spaces Hospitality courtyards and rooftops An instant backdrop that photographs well and needs no irrigation Display homes and property styling Immediate visual lift for marketing and open inspections Office terraces and breakout areas Greenery without ongoing horticultural maintenance Maintenance Cleaning: a periodic rinse or soft brush removes dust, leaves and pollen. UV protection: a UV protection spray adds a further layer of protection in high-exposure positions. Fixings: check panels remain secure after storms or strong winds. Frequently Asked Questions Can green wall panels replace bamboo screening? Yes. Deteriorated screening is usually removed and the panels are fixed to the fence frame or a suitable backing. Screening that is still sound can sometimes be used as a mounting surface. How many panels does a fence need? Each panel covers 1m². Measure each bay, total the area and allow a small margin for trimming. Are the panels suitable for full sun? Yes. UVTex inhibitors are integrated within the leaf, and the panels carry a 5-year warranty for UV-certified outdoor installations. Can the panels be cut to size? Yes. The panels interlock and trim to size with standard scissors. Can I see the panel before ordering? Yes. Visit the Braeside showroom or order a sample panel online. Same deck, same layout.
